At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Stearns to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. The Stearns’ support the impeachment of President Nixon and write, "I strongly doubt that the Founding Fathers, when they put in the impeachment clause, would have visualized a man like Nixon being allowed to remain in office."
