At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Hinton A. Miller to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Miller supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Twice in my life I have faced the problem of putting the general welfare above party loyalty. Having chosen the former each time, I can assure you that you feel better in the long run even though the momentary pressures seem intense."
