At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter signed from Harrison King to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 27, 1973. King supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I believe that only under the most extraordinary cirumstances, circumstances that might lead to the destruction of our democracy, should the impeachment of a president be advocated...but I believe that time is here."
