At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Presley C. Thompson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 16, 1973. Thompson supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He lists his grievances against Nixon and calls it his "Bill of Particulars." He includes; Nixon’s deprivation of Civil Rights, Cambodia, lying to the public, Nixon’s private investigative force, and attempting to bribe a federal judge.
