At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Elizabeth A. Eldridge to Congressman Peter W Rodino forwarded to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 19, 1973. Eldridge is against the impeachment of President Nixon. She mentions having been interviewed by TIME Magazine. and writes, "People have understandably been confused, but let's not have the President of our Country destroyed again, as was Lyndon Johnson, by emotional headlines and hysterical camera shots."
