At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Dorene Sonkin to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 9, 1973. Sonkin supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She lists grievances against Nixon and writes, "He has systematically claimed that the Bill of Rights, designed to protect the people by limiting the power of government officials, does not limit the president or his agents."
