At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Michele McKay McCoy to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 8, 1973. McCoy supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She lists grievances against Nixon and writes, "He's chosen his advisors on the basis of their willingness to break the law for him, and forced out three of the few honest men in his administration for telling him what he didn't want to hear."
