At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from James E. Bryan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 31, 1973. Bryan supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "For nearly two centuries our unique federal structure has functioned with remarkable success, primarily because the responsible officers of each branch have generally understood and respected the roles of the other two."
