At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Marcia Schiller to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 27, 1973. Schiller supports the impeachment of President Nixon and mentions the firing of Archibald Cox. She writes, "In essence, I feel that Mr. Nixon has grossly abused his office and eroded the confidence of the nation that elected him to office."
