At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Brad Solomon to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 30, 1973. Solomon supports the impeachment of President Nixon and mentions the firing of Archibald Cox. He writes, "We cannot allow a system of democracy which many people have built up over a period of two hundred years to be destroyed now because a few people might find it self-serving to cover up the truth."
