Teacher Seminars In Person

This summer we are pleased to offer four in-person seminars in California, Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia. You can apply to any or all of these seminars with a single application, which you will be able to save and then submit whenever you are ready.

Applying

What do I need to know to apply?

You will need to provide a personal statement (500 words or less) where you explain what you hope to gain should you be selected for this program. Here, please share how past, current, and anticipated responsibilities and experience, especially related to US history led you to apply.

Once you start your application, you can save it and return to it later. You only need to submit one application for all the programs, ranking the ones you are interested in.

Costs

Are there any costs involved?

If you are admitted to an in-person seminar, you will be responsible for a $50 non-refundable registration fee and up to $50 for purchasing required readings. Limited travel stipends may be available depending on the program. More information will be provided when you are accepted into a seminar.

Activities

What kinds of activities does this seminar feature?

  • Scholarly lectures and discussions led by the seminar’s director
  • Teaching Literacy through History pedagogy sessions led by a Gilder Lehrman master teacher
  • Discussions and presentations by staff at the host institution featuring primary source materials
  • Virtual or in-person field trips to local historical sites

Schedule and Readings

When will I know the program schedule?

A final schedule and required readings will be shared with participants before the seminar.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the seminar?

Participants will be asked to purchase (for up to $50) and complete the required readings before arriving on site.

Travel

How do I get there?

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. Limited travel stipends will be available. More information will be provided after being accepted into a seminar.

Meals and Accommodations

Does the seminar include room and board?

The Gilder Lehrman Institute will provide meals, program activities, and housing near the venue.

Policies

What are my obligations?

Participants will be required to attend and take part in all scheduled activities.

Will I need to bring anything?

Participants will be asked to bring a laptop, tablet, or similar device. Materials presented before and during the week will be shared electronically.
