2023 Summer Professional Development Offerings
The Gilder Lehrman Institute is pleased to return to Gettysburg College for our second annual Teacher Symposium from July 16 to July 19.
The Symposium will feature seven programs offered concurrently, including courses led by David Blight (Yale University), Brenda Child (University of Minnesota), Gary Gallagher (University of Virginia), Charles McKinney (Rhodes College), Edna Greene Medford (Howard University), Timothy Naftali (New York University), and Kathy Peiss (University of Pennsylvania) as well as a Gettysburg Battlefield tour, networking opportunities for educators, and more.

For 2023, the Institute will offer twelve seminars online over the course of the summer. Each seminar includes
- 3 live Q&A sessions with outstanding scholars in American history, including Donald Fixico (Arizona State University), Kellie Carter Jackson (Wellesley College), Barbara Perry (University of Virginia), and Alan Taylor (University of Virginia)
- Between 12 and 15 hours of video lectures by leading historians to help inform and enhance the Q&A sessions
- Live pedagogy sessions led by Gilder Lehrman Master Teachers
- A discussion and networking session
- Exclusive access to our “Special Topics in History” summer series, featuring conversations with staff and faculty at renowned historical institutions

The Institute will offer in-person, application-based seminars with partner organizations:
- Statesmanship in American History
- In partnership with the James Madison Program at Princeton University
- July 16–21 in Princeton, New Jersey
- Funded by the generosity of the James Madison Program and Princeton University

- Reframing Lincoln Seminar: Myth, Memory, and Changing Narratives
- In partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum
- July 23–28 in Springfield, Illinois
- Funded by the generosity of a donor
- 25 applicants will be accepted

- United States Foreign Policy, 1898 to Present
- In partnership with the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum
- July 31–August 4, 2023 in Yorba Linda, CA
- Funded by the generosity of the Richard Nixon Foundation
- Up to 40 applicants will be accepted

The Making of America: Colonial Era to Reconstruction
This application-based program, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, will allow K–8 educators to study with Professor Denver Brunsman (The George Washington University) in Washington, DC, from July 9 to July 22, 2023.
- 36 applicants will be accepted.
- Participants will receive a stipend of $2,200 to cover housing, meals, and travel.
- Application opens December 1.
