At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One map entitled A Map of Africa, From the best Authorities, dated 1810. Contains the entire continent of Africa, as well as a small portion of the Middle East. The island of Madagascar is also included. The map notes many coastal cities, as well as lakes and rivers. The map has colored regions denoting different kingdoms of people.
