At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One printing of the Supreme Court case, "Arthur W. Mitchell, Apellant vs. The United States of America, Interstate Commerce Commission, Frank O. Lowden, et al," dated April 28, 1941. Opinion has been written by Chief Justice Hughes. Case pertains to a complaint made by Arthur Mitchell regarding discrimination and segregation of black passengers traveling on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway Company. The ruling decided was that it was unconstitutinal to not provide equal amenities to all regardless of race.
