At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "NAACP: its program and objectives" dated approximately in 1960. Front of the flyer details the NAACP's mission for civil rights and number of members part of the organization. Back side consists of summaries of efforts led by the NAACP, with marginalia notes likely written by Henry L. Moon, public relations director. Efforts mention include housing, voting rights, fair employment practices, equal treatment in the court of law, travel restrictions through parts of the south due to segregation, lynching, education, and access to public parks.
