At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of the New-Hampshire Patriot & State Gazette dated August 5, 1833. Issue contains a few interesting articles; one on Daniel Webster and the possibility of a presidential candidacy, one on James Madison's life after his time in the White House, an article concerning a fire at a jail that was holding a group of African Americans, as well as on the abolition of slavery among all British colonies. The paper also contains ads, public notices and an article about catching a sea serpent.
