At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One book entitled, "The Inaugural Book of 1973" dated in 1973. Published by the 1973 Inaugural Committee in honor of the inauguration of President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew. Contains chapters on the official messages and program of the inauguration pertaining to President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon. Most pages feature numerous color photographs from Nixon's first term as President with accompanying quotes from campaign speeches, his First Inaugural Address, and other addresses and remarks to the nation. Adhered to the inside of the book's front cover and first page are two invitations to the inauguration of President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew, a general admission "Standing Room Senate" ticket, and an inaugural ball ticket.
