At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One official program for the inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon, dated January 20, 1953. Contents include information about the 1953 inaugural ceremonies, ball, parade, and inaugural committee. Also includes portraits and biographical sketches of Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Herbert Hoover, Mamie Eisenhower, and Patricia Nixon as well as "The Picture Story of Dwight D. Eisenhower." Pages titled "Your Nation's Capital" provide images and brief descriptions of historic sites in Washington, D.C. Program has numerous illustrations.
