At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Florence Huber to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated December 10, 1943. Florence writes that they received his card and are glad to hear he enjoys the Navy. She mentions the picture that Leonard's mother gave to them, she compliments him on the photo. She explains that John would write but he’s been busy between work and recovery from the surgery. He is looking better, and has gained weight. John walks every day, reads, and listens to the radio. They heard a program on the radio from Great Lakes with a singing group called the Blue Jackets. Florence encloses a Christmas card (GLC09611.169.01) they will be going to John’s sister's house for the holiday.
