At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Statements Relative to Slaves Executed, Reprieved for Transportation &c," dated March 2, 1852. Contains three pages of tables that gives the names of enslaved people, slaveowner names, crimes charged against the enslaved, dates of reprieves and execution and amount of money made from selling the enslaved. Data gathered by the Executive Department and sent to the House of Delegates.
