At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One typed letter from Arthur Ruhl addressed to Cyril J.C. Quinn dated Samara, September 6, 1922. Pertains to experiences of Mackenzie, a correspondent and his translator, Mr. Hayden. Hayden recognized a woman in the office as someone he had helped; and threatened by local agents to divulge information about the American Relief Administration. Ruhl recommends protection for employees; and his expected date to depart.
