At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto taken by United Press International dated April 6, 1968. Depicts the view through a simulated rifle scope aimed at the spot where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel. The shot was taken from an adjacent motel bathroom window.
