At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One press photograph taken by John Storey from the San Francisco Examiner dated October 15, 1991. Image is of a woman participating in a rally. She holds a sign that reads, "We will remember." Pasted on the reverse side is a newspaper clipping. The text identifies the woman as B.J. Martin who participated in a pro-choice group rally against Clarence Thomas's confirmation to the Supreme Court.
