Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One press photograph of Clarence Thomas speaking to the press shortly after being nominated for the Supreme Court. Standing next to him was President George H.W. Bush. There are red markings on the photograph around Thomas's face. Wire transfer information states that the image was taken after Bush announced Thomas's nomination to the Supreme Court. Also mentions that the White House released a statement confirming that Thomas had smoked marijuana in college.
