At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto entitled, "Came the Dawn" taken by Associated Press dated March 11, 1965. Image is of a line of protestors wrapped in blankets by a church. Police officers are photographed alongside of them. Wire transfer information states that the protesters staged a camp-in. Their plan was to march to the courthouse following the sleeping on the street in front of a church.
