At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph dated May 12, 1963. Features a crowd gathered in front of a city hall. Image is of a crowd of demonstrators at the steps of city hall. Two children stand out from the crowd in the bottom left of the photograph. On reverse side is a stamp that reads, "Racial Segregation - S.F. Demonstration City Hall."
