At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One press photo of United States map which includes cities in Michigan such as Detroit, Kalamazoo, Rochester, New Britain, Wadesboro, Lakeland, Birmingham, Bogalusa, and Youngstown have been written in. Aside this map is one of New Jersey scratched out by pencil. On reverse side is a stamp that says "Received Examiner Reference Library, July 25, 1967" and "Racial Segregation/Detroit, Michigan," with a pasted newsclipping.
