At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of press photographs dated 1968. Images were printed by Associated Press and United Press International. Majority of images are related to riots that took place following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr in April 1968. One image is dated February 1968 depicting a civil rights protest. Locations of the photographs are in Chicago, Richmond, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and others. Certain images in this collection contain graphic violence of police brutality against Black people.
