At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter written from Okinawa, Ryuku Islands, June 10, 1945, to "Helena," regarding arrving to camp to rest after a muddy trek. Describes malnourished condition of civilians that he and his troop found hiding in a cave and the aid the soldiers provided. Mentions a Corporal Mulhauser who sketched a profile of him that he would send soon and a point system that determines when men can be released from the Army. Signed by "Unk."
