At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "22. Alaska Lookout" depicting American forces setting up a base in Alaska. One soldier illustrated carrying a gun while jet planes fly past him. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative that mentions Alaska as the first line of defense. Describes the cold temperatures, "radar towers, jet planes and ground forces."
