At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Sergeant S.J. Basile to Jennie Mosca dated May 14, 1944. He thanks her for her latest letter. He comments on how long it is and reassures her that he is aware of how much she loves him and that he returns her love. He mentions sending his newest photo of him behind his desk. He writes he has a "growly face" because of all the paperwork on it, which is three days behind. He wishes her love and apologizes for the shortness of the letter, he will write a longer one soon. The letter is written over a printed form that is in Japanese. There was a photo (GLC09604.02) and a photo negative (GLC9604.03) accompanying the letter.
