At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Elizabeth writes one of her sons, asking his opinion on letting a Mr. Hooks be empowered to retain some of her papers that he is working on until the work is finished. Hooks asked in case of Elizabeth passing away before the work is done, and if he does not receive power, who should the papers go to.
