At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Elizabeth writes that she just received a power of attorney for Mrs. Mitchell addressed to Dr. Stevens. However she advises that Dr. Stevens is already engaged and suggests instead sends a power of attorney to a Mr. Cruger her nephew. Cruger is sailing to Saint Croix on January first and so can be Mrs. Mitchell's agent then.
