At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Wilma Primer Hughes from Jim Hughes dated April 9, 1968. Requests plastic playing cards that he has requested from his mother. He mentions that the money she recently sent him has already been "won back" and that by being paid again he is "ahead of the game." He expresses concern for Pat, mentions Margaret, Carolyn and Carrie Jean, and states that the weather has been hot.
