At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document is typed by General Besancon of the II French Artillery Corps to General Maris, Artillery Commander of the XXI U.S. Corps. In the letter, General Besancon thanks Maris for his artillery work and that he is proud to have fought by his side. He excuses himself for not having thanked him in person as he was urgently needed elsewhere.
