At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing from the Tuskegee Institute, LeRoi describes to his family, how his flight training is going, including a recent flight to Chattanooga. On page 5 are diagrams of flying formations he and his classmates are learning. He then tells his mother he hopes she will come to his graduation, promising to pay the expense.
