Hammond to wife. Although the month of the letter is not known, the letter was likely written on August 22nd, 1864 based on what is known about Hammond's whereabouts during the war and that of the 189th New York. Hopes letter finds her in good health and good spirits. Talk of joining a regiment and going to Elmiru [Elmira]. Consoles her, reminding her that he would only be gone for a little while. With the new regiment, he will get to go to Harpers Ferry. Will send home money from his pay as soon as he can. Not much to write about. Richard Collins will "be up on Saturday," so she should get him three pigs. Comforts her, telling her to "keep good courage."

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
