Diamond writes that they have been "moving so fast, so often, so far" that he "just can't squeeze in mail - ". Sidney continues to explain that he now knows why he is in the war, that in "unmitigated brutality - barbarism - cruelty - the Japanese take the grand prize -", proceeding to provide examples of such cruelty. He states: "…I'm glad I'm here - I'm glad we've helped these people and hope we can drive the enemy out of the Philippines quickly - "
