At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate act allowing for the use of slaves as troops in the army. "In order to provide additional forces to repel invasion...the President be and he is authorized to ask for and accept from the owners of slaves the services of such number of able-bodied negro men as he may deem expidient, for and during the war, to perform miiltary services."
