At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "The Battle of Chippewa" dated 1858. Depicts United States Commander Winfield Scott ordering the charge of McNeils Battalion during the battle of Chippewa, July 5, 1814. Engraved from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel. Painting was in possession of the publisher at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
