Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints acts relating to international commerce between the United States, Britain and France. Also prints President James Madison's proclamation effectively ending the embargo, in accordance with Macon's Bill, which had been passed in 1810. Contains an address by Timothy Pickering to the people of the United States and a proclamation by Connecticut Governor John Treadwell. Features news from Europe as well as many announcements and advertisements.
