Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains news near the beginning of the War of 1812. Notable reports on Napoleon's invasion of Russia and other foreign news. Also reports on the American surrender at Fort Detroit by General William Hull in August 1812, editorializes against President Madison's war policy (see "The Prospect Before Us"), and prints other news items pertaining to the war. Contains many advertisements.
