Paine, Thomas. COMMON SENSE, bound with seven other tracts by Paine. Altogether eight works (in nine parts, one title consisting of two separately issued parts.) A fine collection bound in a single volume, contemp. sheep rubbed, crudely but neatly rebacked early in sheep; in very good condition throughout.
These are all (with the possible exception of #4) reprints but they are early, generally within the first or second year of the original; some are rare according to NUC; the various publishers, Symonds, Williams, Jordan, and Ridgeway, represent (with the notable absence of D.I. Eaton) the principal disseminators of Paine's writings during the early 1790's. The titles are as follows:
1. Common sense ... A new edition ... London, E.D. Symonds, 1793. 36pp. Gimbel CS-78.
2. Rights of man ... Part I. London, H.D. Symonds, 1792. 86pp.
3. Rights of man ... Part the second ... the sixth edition. London, J. S. Jordan, 1792. 103 pp.
4. Letter addressed to the addressees on the late proclamation. London, H.D. Symonds. 1792. 39pp. McCoy P8 implies that this is the first edition. It was also published in 1792 by Jordan, which Howes P-28 gives as the first edition.
5. A letter addressed to the Abbe Raynal on the affairs of North America ... London, J. Ridgeway, 1793. 36pp.
6. Miscellaneous articles by Thomas Paine ... London. J. Ridgeway, 1793. 36pp.
7. Disseration on first principles of government. London, printed for the proprietors, n.d. (c.1796.) 24pp. Apparently complete as issued; normally this turns up with an added speech by Paine comprising pp.2531.
8. Age of reason. Part the first ... [second] London. T. Williams, 1796. 107pp. Continuously paginated but with a separate title page for part two. NUC notes "for publishing this edition Williams was tried on a charge of blasphemy, June 24, 1797, and sentenced to one year's imprisonment." cf. McCoy P9.
9. Decline and fall of the English system of finance. Paris, printed by Hartly ... London. reprinted for T. Williams. 1796. 24 pp.
