Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discussing Sherman's order to cut civilian rations and expressing some sympathy for its impact on "secesh women": "it is hard for the authorities to see women starve." Analyzing the upcoming presidential election: "we hope to elect Lincoln again and then the rebs know their cause is gone." And broadly reflecting on the war: "[W]e hope that we will beat them...and that the old Union with all the Stars made brighter by the firey trial we have passed through...."
