At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One blank postcard dated circa 1940's based on a 1880's portrait of Frederick Douglass. Printed on the rear of the postcard is the text, "Frederick Douglass1818-1895 Born a slaveon the eastern shore of Maryland, but ran away to become a great anti-slavery leader."
