Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three-quarter length seated portrait of Grant in civilian dress. Ornately decorated column visible on his left and carved table on his right. Albumen print on thick black mount with rounded corners and gilded edges all around. The address of photographer Abraham Bogardus's New York studio is inscribed in the bottom right corner: "872 Broadway cor. 18th St." Handwritten calculations of unknown origin pencilled on verso.
