At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Pray strengthen my arms in the South for the support of the Union & the Constitution & do not arrest us whilst we are dealing blows upon your enemies & our enemies by stopping as to inquire the construction which we may place on this or that resolution of the platform which, so far as slavery question is concerned, appears to be quite clear & satisfactory."
