At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on the occasion of Breedlove's retirement from office. Cassedy does not believe current newspaper reports regarding Breedlove's mishandling of funds. He writes: "The allegation … is probably intended to affect the popular tide of the next Presidential Election: nothing is too base and unprincipled for the instrumentality of faction…" Written near Gallatin, Tennessee.
