At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Winchester's correspondence includes letters received as the highest ranking American prisoner in Canada. Later his correspondence includes documents relating to the British attack on New Orleans in 1815. Highlights include a manuscript map of the area around Ohio's Raisin River and letters received describing the British approach by sea to New Orleans.
