At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He hasn't been able to write because the Rebels made a raid and succeeded in teaming up several miles of track between Bridgeport and Nashville. He tells her that at one point 40 Rebels gave themselves up to their men. The food he's been eating and the weather are also described.
